I tried something new today...

A friend of a friend highly recommended that the fishing for smallies was hot right now, so I decided to check it out.

Here is what we encountered. It was nothing like we expected. A big river that was low and showing it's really cool rock sculptures...

We didn't have much time (or luck) but we fished it hard, then not so hard...

We brought a few of these guys to hand, as well as a couple of troot...

I was home by 6.

Did you experience the Umpqua "green" color? I have a very distinct impression of the color of that river. It's emerald colored. The McKenzie river is the closest in color, but its more blue than the Umpqua. The Umpqua is emerald and as near of a pure color impression as I've ever had. It's absolutely unique.

That river has a character so different than other Oregon rivers. I feel a bit crazy to say that I think rivers have characters, but that was the first big river that I ever loved. Each year, I'm completely fascinated by the rocks disappearing into emerald colored rapids and riffles and reappearing each summer.

I'm glad you finally got to meet that river. Now I think you need to get to know it better. I think you've got my quintessential image of Umpqua green trapped inside you and that camera of yours needs to let it out.

I love that river.

Heather,

We were a little lower on the river so we didn't really get the best look at the "green". It's a beautiful place that definitely needs more exploration!
